Who’s Behind It

A personal note on CannaSEO.com, PremiumBrands and choosing a name worth building on.

Why I selected a name this focused

I built PremiumBrands around names I would consider using for a business myself. CannaSEO.com fits that approach because it gives a founder a specific field to work in. I can picture the name on a proposal from a search specialist, on a software product serving location teams, or on research that takes this market seriously. The common thread is focus. A founder can decide what to offer without spending the first meeting explaining an unrelated name.

I like that directness in a category name. The business still needs a point of view, but the introduction has somewhere useful to begin. For CannaSEO.com, I would want the offer to be as clear as the name: a defined customer, a real problem and work that somebody can inspect. A useful technical assessment or a well-run publishing process gives the identity substance each time the business delivers it.

What changed my view of names

In 2007, I acquired the press release distribution business running on i-Newswire.com. I secured iNewswire.com in 2013. Then, after more than a year of negotiating and consulting SEO professionals, I moved the business to Newswire.com in February 2015. Those were decisions made while building an operating business, with the practical work of a transition attached to them.

The morning of the switch, a prospect told one of our sales agents, “Oh yeah, Newswire.com. I've heard of you guys.” That was impossible. I still remember the story because it captured the first impression of the new name so plainly. We had changed the address, and that one introduction felt different before the sales conversation had gone very far.

The business was acquired by Issuer Direct in 2022 for about $44 million. That was a purchase of the business and the team's work, not a sale of the domain. The distinction matters to how I think about names. The years of operating work belong in that story, alongside the decision to choose an identity that described the business cleanly.

Choosing before the plan is finished

I bought PremiumBrands.com before I had a plan for it. Premium names matter to me, and I believed waiting would probably mean losing the chance to use this one. By now it could belong to someone building on it, in which case it would most likely no longer be for sale. I wanted the option to build something on a name I believed in.

My test is straightforward: would I build on this? I buy names with an end user's perspective, and the names I have not built on yet are the ones I am open to selling. That is the thinking behind this collection. OnlineBusiness.com is my supporting strategy and development studio; PremiumBrands is where I present selected names for another founder to consider.

With CannaSEO.com, the question becomes concrete quickly. Would I want a name that commits the business to this industry and this discipline? For a founder whose work belongs here, that commitment can be useful. It gives the company a subject to keep returning to as it develops its expertise, hires people and explains what it does.

The work behind the first impression

AI makes it easier to get a working product or a first draft onto a screen. I find that exciting because more founders can test an idea before assembling a large team. It also puts more weight on the decisions that make one business recognizable. A name can give the product, the writing and the conversations a consistent identity while the founder learns what the market needs.

The fix-it-later mindset says to settle on a name now and upgrade once the business has made it. I understand the appeal, but a later change reaches email addresses, packaging, signage and the name customers already know. It also depends on the preferred name still being available. Those are real decisions to include in a launch plan.

A great name won't save a bad business. I see it as a head start that deserves good work behind it. If CannaSEO.com fits what you want to build, tell me about the business through PremiumBrands. If your best name is outside the collection, tell me which one; helping founders acquire the name they want is the other side of this work. A premium .com is a trust shortcut.
